Men's Lacrosse Players Earn MAAC All-Academic Recognition

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced it's selections for the 2003 MAAC Men's Lacrosse All-Academic Team on Thursday, May 1 at the MAAC Tournament banquet in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Senior Matt Berk (Glencoe, Ill.) earned MAAC All-Academic honors for the third-straight year, while junior Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.) earned the honor for the second time in his career. Junior Ryan Russell (Montvale, N.J.) and sophomores Mark Rotella (Smithtown, N.Y.), Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Richard Knightly (Windsor, Mass.) were selected to the All-Academic Team for the first time in their careers.

To be eligible for MAAC All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have completed two semesters at their institution, be a significant contributor as a starter or key reserve, and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.

Berk, a three-time selection to the MAAC All-Academic Team, holds a cumulative grade-point average of 3.60 as a finance major at Providence. He is the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) and is the student-athlete representative on the athletic department's Board of Directors. On April 30, Berk was honored with the Mal Brown Award at the College's 42nd annual All-Sports Banquet. The Mal Brown Award is given to a graduating male senior who demonstrated sportsmanship, courage and honor during his athletic career at the College. In 2003, Berk played in just seven games because of injury. He registered six groundballs and now has 83 groundballs for his career. He is the son of Diane and Andy Berk.

Kornobis, a two-time All-MAAC Academic selection, holds a cumulative grade-point average of 3.48 and majors in accountancy. In 2003, Kornobis finished the regular season with 14 points on seven goals and a career-high seven assists. In his three years with the Friars, he has totaled 44 points on 38 goals and 16 assists. He is the son of Carol and Ken Kornobis.

Russell, currently ranks fifth on the team in scoring this season with career highs in goals (13) and assists (one) for a total of 14 points. In his three seasons with the Friars, Russell has recorded 19 goals, one assist and 20 points. As a history major, he has accumulated a 3.24 cumulative grade-point average. He is the son of Susan and Kevin Russell.

Rotella is the Friars' primary face-off man and holds the highest cumulative GPA on the team (3.95) as a mathematics major. On April 20, Rotella was one of 273 student-athletes selected out of 1,172 nominations to attend the 2003 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. (May 25-29). In 2003, Rotella registered the first assist of his career, and has recorded a .475 face-off percentage and 31 groundballs. In two seasons, Rotella has 78 career groundballs and a .519 face-off percentage. He is the son of Frank and Liz Rotella.

Bosco, a 2003 All-MAAC Second-Team selection, holds a cumulative grade-point average of 3.22 as a finance major. Bosco earned his first set of All-MAAC honors with seven goals, six assists, 13 points and 20 groundballs. For his career, he has amassed 33 points on 20 goals and 13 assists and also has a total of 52 groundballs. He is the son of Frank and Barbara Bosco.

Knightly is the final Providence All-MAAC Academic honoree. He is a finance major with a cumuative grade-point average of 3.26. As a midfielder, he has recorded a career-high two goals for the Friars in 2003 and has collected 13 groundballs. In his two year career, Knightly has tallied three goals and one assist, along with 26 groundballs. He is the son of Robert and Corinne Knightly.
