Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College softball team used the strong pitching of senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) and freshman Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) to sweep a non-conference double header, 8-0, 2-0 at the University of Rhode Island on Thursday, April 8 in Kingston, R.I. Van Dusen and Surosky combined to pitch a no-hitter in the first game. It marked the fourth no-hitter in Providence history and the second this season.

Van Dusen earned her third shutout of the year as she pitched four innings and allowed no hits, two walks and struck out five batters. Surosky pitched one inning and retired all three batters as the Friars captured the first game, 8-0, in five innings.

The Friars scored seven runs in the third inning and never looked back. Junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) drove in the game's first run as she singled to center field to drive in classmate Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas), who led off the inning with a double. After sophomore Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) reached on an error, freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) drove in both Petersen and Romero with a single to left field to make the score, 3-0. Garvin then scored on a wild pitch as PC jumped ahead, 4-0. Sophomore Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) hit a two-run home run to give the Friars a comfortable 6-0 advantage. Willette finished with three hits and two RBI.

Surosky started the second game and pitched four innings before she was relieved by Van Dusen as the Friars recorded 2-0 victory. Surosky earned her fifth win of the season and her second shutout as she allowed six hits and struck out six batters. Van Dusen did not allow a hit and posted two strikeouts. The Friars scored the only two runs of the game in the fifth inning when Romero hit a two-run home run to center field. Petersen also scored on the play after reaching on a fielder's choice. Romero and Petersen each finished with two hits.

Providence will play Fairfield on Saturday, April 10 in Fairfield, Conn.
