LEXINGTON, Va. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated VMI, 11-9, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Saturday, March 26 in Lexington, Va. Senior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.) and freshman Robert Lamontagne (Pittsford, N.Y.) each scored three goals in the victory. It was Giuntini's second hat trick of the season, while Lamontagne netted the first points of his collegiate career with his first collegiate hat trick.
Giuntini also surpassed the 100-point plateau in the victory, becoming the 18th Friar in program history to accomplish the feat. With his three goals vs. the Keydets, Giuntini now has 102 career points on 79 goals and 23 assists. His 102 points moves him into a tie for 16th on PC's all-time scoring list, while his 79 goals ranks ninth all-time at Providence.
VMI took a 1-0 lead to start the game just 4:41 into the first quarter as Leo McInerney netted an unassisted goal. Giuntini put the Friars on top, 2-1, with consecutive tallies to end the first quarter. His first goal came with 2:36 remaining, unassisted, in a man-down situation. He scored for the second time, as the Friars held a man advantage, with 1:30 on the clock. Sophomore Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) was credited with the assist.
In the second quarter, the Friars scored two more goals to take a 4-1 lead. Lamontagne scored unassisted at the 12:34 mark. Sophomore Mark Bundra (Winnetka, Ill.) found the back of the net off an assist from Ryan 2:02 later at the 10:36 mark. The Keydets rallied to within one goal (4-3)after scoring on two quick hits at 9:51 and 9:14. Tony Cavalero and Robert Trimble each scored in the span, unassisted. The Friars answered with two more goals from senior Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Lamontagne at 7:21 and 6:08, respectively. Both goals were unassisted, and gave PC a 6-3 advantage.
VMI scored three straight goals to in the second quarter to tie the game, 6-6. Trimble netted his second and third goals of the afternoon at 4:56 and 2:19 to make the score, 6-5, in favor of Providence. His first goal in the span was unassisted, while he registered his second off a pass from Gabe McCaig. Erik Rohrmann then netted a man-up goal off an assist from Kevin Hill with 56-seconds remaining in the half to even the score at 6-6. Providence, however, would take a 7-6 advantage into halftime as Hollister scored, unassisted, with just four seconds remaining on the clock.
Providence took an 9-6 lead to start the third quarter on goals from junior Mark Seyer (Kirkwood, Mo.) and Giuntini. Seyer scored in a man-up situation off an assist from Ryan at 12:14. Giuntini's goal proved to be the eventual game winner, as he found the back of the cage at the 7:38 mark off a feed from Bundra. VMI answered with two more goals to make the score 9-8 in the third quarter. David Trimble scored off a feed from Robert Trimble in a man-advantage opportunity at the 5:23 mark. McInerney then scored, unassisted, with 1:20 to play in the quarter. The Friars found a way to score in the closing seconds, once again, as junior Tom Kelly (Henniker, N.H.) netted an unassisted goal with seven seconds on the clock to give PC a 10-8 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Lamontagne boosted the Friar lead to 11-8 on his third goal of the game with 9:37 left in regulation. VMI's Cavalero hit the back of the cage for the final goal of the game at the 8:43 mark to make the final score, 11-9.
Senior goalkeeper Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 13 saves for Providence between the pipes, including nine of those 13 saves in the second half. Dan Frank made five saves for VMI in goal.
