Softball Sweeps Double Header Versus Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Harvard, 12-4, 4-1, in a double header on Wednesday, March 30 at Raymond Field on the campus of Providence College.

In the first game, the Friars took a 2-0 first inning lead on RBI hits by senior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.). However the Crimson responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning as Danielle Kerper belted a grand slam to give Harvard a 4-2 lead.

The Friars tied the game in the second inning with two runs and added four more in the fourth inning to take an 8-4 lead. The fourth inning was highlighted by sophomore Rachel Bartholomew's three-run bases clearing double. Willette, who had five hits and six RBI in the first game, hit a three run home run to cap off the scoring.

On the mound, Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) held Harvard scoreless after the first inning as she earned her eighth win of the season. She also had eight strikeouts and allowed just three hits.

The second game was tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Providence College junior catcher Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) blasted a three-run home run to center field leading the Friars to a 4-1 victory over Harvard.. Romero also added a single in the seventh inning, and notched her second home run of the season with the fifth inning long ball.

PC freshman right handed pitcher Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) hurled a complete game scattering three hits and allowing just one run. She also fanned three Crimson batters to earn her fifth win of the season, and retired the side in order in four of the seven frames.

With the double header sweep, Providence College softball (16-5) has now won six of its last seven games. The Friars return to action on Thursday, March 31st with a double header against Quinnipiac at PC's Raymond Field. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
