PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (25-10) swept a doubleheader against Holy Cross (7-20) this afternoon at PC's Raymond Field. The Friars won the first game, 5-0, behind a solid pitching performance from sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.). In the second game, PC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 2-1 victory.
In Game One, PC used three home runs, including a pair in the fifth inning, to slip by Holy Cross, 5-0. Freshman designated player Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left center field. It was her second homerun of the season, and gave the Friars a 1-0 lead.
Junior Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) led off the bottom of the fifth frame with a solo smash to center field accounting for her team-leading seventh long ball of the season. Sophomore Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) followed later in the inning with a two-out, three-run blast down the right field line. The home run looped around the right field foul pole, and nailed the top of the wooden shed beyond the fence.
On the mound for the Friars, sophomore starting pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) cruised through game to earn her first individual shutout of the year. The Empire State native fanned five batters and allowed just four hits en route to her fifth win of the season.
In Game Two, PC used a one-out, come-from-behind rally to capture the win. The teams were scoreless thru the first five innings of the contest as PC freshman pitcher freshman Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and HC sophomore pitcher Sheena Stangler held both offenses at bay.
Crusaders junior Meghan Lally broke the tie though as she led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run to right field to make it 1-0, Holy Cross.
Sara Surosky entered the game on the mound in the top of the seventh inning for the Friars and retired the side in order setting up the bottom of the seventh heroics. She also earned her second win of the afternoon with the 13-pitch, scoreless effort.
With one down, junior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif) reached on a Holy Cross error. Pittman followed with a walk bringing up senior Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.). The first baseman crushed a 3-2 pitch deep into center field, a blast that almost ended the game as it caromed off the top of the outfield fence. Romero, waiting to make sure the ball wasn't caught, hustled around the bases and tied the game at 1-1.
Senior Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) followed next and ripped the first pitch she saw into deep left field for the game-winning hit. Pittman scored and the Friars concluded their sweep.
Providence softball takes its two-game win streak into a pivotal BIG EAST Conference schedule this weekend. The Friars will host a quartet of games at PC's Raymond Field, beginning on Saturday, April 16th against Notre Dame beginning at 12:00 p.m. The Friars will also host Pittsburgh on Sunday, April 17th, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
