PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Lacrosse Coach Chris Burdick announced the appointment of Kyle Plumly as assistant lacrosse coach at Providence College. Plumly was serving as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware under the direction of former Providence assistant Christian Zwickert. Plumly has helped Wesley to back-to-back 10-win seasons as well as appearances in two conference tournaments. Prior to Wesley, the College of Wooster graduate served one year as head lacrosse coach at Bridgton Academy where he reported to Athletic Director Brad Smith. Kyle began his coaching career at his alma mater, leading the College of Wooster to its first-ever NCAA appearance.

Plumly joins a veteran staff at Providence. Head Coach Chris Burdick embarks on his 10th season with the Friars and 16th season in college coaching. Head Assistant Keith Loftis and Volunteer Assistant Jim Mascia (Providence '98) enter their ninth and eighth seasons respectively. The latter following a great career as a face-off specialist at Providence. "We are very excited to have Kyle join our program," noted Burdick. "Kyle has a strong desire to become a head coach and that was our first criteria in filling the position. His transition will be facilitated by his background and working with Christian Zwickert, who has a firm understanding of the game of lacrosse and runs a system that is not too far away in scheme and language from our own."

Plumly has been mentored by Christian Zwickert who, along with Will Parris, served as an assistant coach at Providence in 1999 as part of fellow Delaware alum Coach Burdick's first coaching staff. According to Zwickert, "Kyle has a passion for the game and for working with the student-athletes. His contribution to the growth of lacrosse at Wesley has been substantial and we are very excited to see him move on to a great opportunity at Providence."

"I am very appreciative of the opportunity that Providence College and Coach Burdick have extended to me to join the Friar family," Plumly said. "It is an honor to work for an institution so rich in academic and athletic tradition. This transition marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my life and coaching career. I would like to sincerely thank the Wesley College community for its support over the past few years; with special recognition going to the men's lacrosse team, especially Christian Zwickert, for his mentoring and preparation to help me take this step."

Plumly follows a line of great former Friar student-athletes who have served in the position while finishing their graduate studies at the college. John Pynchon is the most recent in a line of Friars that included Kyle Ojakian, Kevin Kornobis and Brent Swaby. According to team captain and current graduate student Bennett Murphy, "Coach Plumly is an energetic and confident teacher who comes to us with a solid understanding of our system and how we operate as a program."

The addition of this position marks a continued growth of lacrosse at Providence College. According to Burdick, "This position is a product of great work by Providence College President Rev. Brian Shanley, O.P., Athletic Director Bob Driscoll and Associate Athletic Director for the Friar Athletic Fund Steve Napolillo, who are the battery behind our fundraising efforts in athletics. The growth in lacrosse and athletics at Providence has been substantial. In three years, the college has added a brand new fitness center with varsity weight room, a new training room, a new equipment room, a lighted turf field and press box, and soon will have completed a new lacrosse locker complex with a multi media room for team meetings. The addition of a stipend coaching position is just another example of the commitment of our alumni and the college in our effort to be successful in lacrosse."

"I was very fortunate to have had great mentors in Bob Shillinglaw, Kevin Corrigan, Greg Cannella and Richie Moran help me develop on the way to becoming a head coach," commented Burdick. "I know Kyle has worked under a great mentor and even better person in Christian Zwickert at Wesley College and Brad Smith at Bridgton Academy, and I am confident that we are adding someone with loyalty, class and conviction to our program."
