PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team dropped its third-consecutive game as it fell to Vermont, 1-0, at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on October 19. With the loss, the Friars fall to 9-8 overall, while Vermont improves to 8-7 on the season.
Vermont took a 1-0 lead in the game during the 30th minute of play as Wendy Carbone knocked the ball into the back of the cage off a rebound. It proved to be the game-winner as Providence was held scoreless, despite several good chances in front of the cage. Prior to the goal, the Friars had one of their best scoring opportunities thwarted by the stingy defense of Vermont. In the 25th minute, Providence midfielder Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) took a shot during a penalty corner that got past UVM's goalkeeper, but was saved on the goal line by Lauren Burke.
Providence outshot Vermont 11-10 in the game, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Catamounts earned eight penalty corners, while the Friars registered five.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) made four saves for Providence. Kristen Heavens earned the shutout for Vermont with five saves. Lauren Burke was credited with a defensive save.
Providence returns to action on Wednesday, October 22 against cross-city rival Brown at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played on Warner Roof on the campus of Brown University in Providence, R.I.
