COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Georgetown, 6-2, in BIG EAST regular-season play on October 26 in College Park, Md. With the victory, the Friars clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Tournament for the third-consecutive season. The last time Providence qualified for the BIG EAST Field Hockey Tournament three-straight years dates back to the 1996, 1997 and 1998 campaigns. The Friars have advanced to the Championship Game during each of the last two seasons.

The Hoyas got on the scoreboard first to take a 1-0 lead just 7:21 into the game as Kristen Volpe found the back of the cage off an assist from Kalli Krumpos. Providence answered with two goals in the final 3:59 of the first half to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) struck first off a feed from sophomore Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) at 31:01. Sophomore Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) put the Friars ahead, 2-1, with an unassisted tally at 34:48.

Providence continued its scoring attack with four unanswered goals in a span of eight minutes and 20 seconds, beginning at 51:55 with a goal from Hudson, which was assisted by junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.). Poulin then netted back-to-back goals at 53:04 and 55:37 to give Providence a 5-1 lead. Her first goal in the span was assisted by senior Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) and her second came via a feed from Marois. Lane finished off the scoring at 59:45 on a direct shot during a penalty corner. The tally was assisted by Marois and senior Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.). Marois finished the day with a single-game career-high of three assists, while Poulin netted the first three-goal game of her career at Providence.

Georgetown's Ashton Hospodar scored a late goal at 68:11 to make the final score 6-2. Hospodar's goal was assisted by Lila Samperton.

The Friars outshot the Hoyas, 17-5, including a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal. Providence also held a 9-1 edge in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) finished the day with one save for Providence. Deirdre Crovo made nine saves in goal for Georgetown.

Providence will conclude its regular-season schedule on Saturday, November 1 against No. 17 Massachusetts at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Prior to the game, the program will honor its four-member senior class. The class of 2009 includes, Maggie Ciarcia (Dennis, Mass.), Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.), Ali Kornfeld (Kingston, Pa.) and Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.).

Further information regarding the BIG EAST Tourament will be made available when the final standings and seedings have been released by the league office. The Tournament is scheduled for November 8-9 at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn.
