CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Providence College field hockey team took a tough, 4-1, loss to 11th-ranked Virginia on Sunday, August 31 in Charlottesville, Va.
Sophomore Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) scored Providence's lone goal during the 51st minute of play off a feed from junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.). Prior to that, Virginia rattled off four straight goals.
The first of the day came on a penalty stroke opportunity, taken by Michelle Vittese at the 20:11 mark of the first half. Haley Carpenter then gave Uva a 2-0 lead heading into halftime as she took a feed from Inge Kaars Sijpestei.
The Cavaliers put the game out of reach with two quick scores within the first three minutes of the second half. Lauren Elstein found the back of the cage, unassisted, at 36:15. Paige Selenksi added the Cavaliers final goal of the afternoon at 37:26 off a feed from Vittese.
Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded nine saves in goal for Providence. Amy Desjadon started in goal for the Cavaliers and did not register a save. Devon Burnley posted two saves in goal for Virginia and allowed PC's only goal in the second half of play.
Providence (1-1) returns to action on Thursday, September 4 against regional foe Northeastern at 3:00 p.m. in Boston, Mass.
