PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 2 Syracuse, 4-2, in BIG EAST Conference action at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I on Friday, September 26. Junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) netted both Friar goals in the effort, while junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) registered 10 saves.
Syracuse hopped on the scoreboard first just 11:22 into the contest as Anne-Sophie Van der Post connected on her third goal of the season off an option on a penalty corner. Shannon Taylor was credited with the assist. Providence tied the score, 1-1, as Poulin notched her fourth goal of the year at the 31:11 mark as she was fed a pass from sophomore Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) on a give and go.
The Orange broke the Friars' momentum in the closing seconds of the first half. Syracuse was awarded a penalty corner with 28 seconds remaining on the clock. Van der Post took an initial shot during the corner, which was saved by Chamberlain. SU's Lindsey Conrad collected the rebound off the pads and slipped it into the back of the cage with two seconds remaining for a 2-1 lead.
The Friars would answer to tie the game, 2-2, just 3:53 into the second half as Poulin scored on a deflection off an initial shot taken by sophomore Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.). Ruggieri was credited with the assist.
Syracuse then closed the game with two unanswered goals at 40:34 and 52:21 to earn the 4-2 victory. Shelby Schraden notched her sixth goal of the year off a crossing pass from Nicole Nelson for what proved to be the game winner. Taylor then notched her 11th tally of the season on a direct shot during a penalty corner. Martina Loncarica and Maggie Befort were credited with the assists on the play.
The Orange held a 15-6 advantage in shots during the game, which included an 11-2 edge in the first 35 minutes of play. Each team recorded just four shots in the second half. Syracuse also held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Providence will return to action on Sunday, September 28 against Maine at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
