Men's Lacrosse Takes On First-Place Marist Wednesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team will look to reclaim first place in the MAAC standings when it takes on Marist on Wednesday, April 15 at 4:00 p.m. at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. PC enters the game with a 5-6 record (4-1 MAAC) and a third place spot in the MAAC standings. Marist sports a 4-5 record (4-0 MAAC) in 2009 and is tied for first place in the league.

The Friars hold an 11-5 advantage in the all-time series versus the Red Foxes. In the last meeting between the schools, Marist prevailed, 7-6, on April 16, 2008 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. PC is 5-3 at home, 5-1 away and 1-1 on neutral fields all-time against the Red Foxes. The schools first met in 1995, with Marist earning a 15-12 win in Providence.

PC is coming off a 7-5 loss to Mt. St. Mary's on Saturday, April 11 in Emmitsburg, Md. After trailing 6-2 with under 10 minutes to play in the final quarter, the Friars used a 3-0 run to pull within one goal, but could not complete the comeback in the game's final minutes. Juniors Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) and Jackson Fallon (Arlington, Mass.) led PC with three points each on two goals and an assist.

Providence's defense is anchored by junior Ryan Riedl (Winchester, Mass.) The 6-3 defenseman picked up eight ground balls and caused six turnovers in games last week against Dartmouth and Mt. St. Mary's. Riedl's six ground balls versus the Mount was a personal best. On the season, he leads the Friars with 15 caused turnovers and ranks second on the team with 29 ground balls.

Scouting Marist

Marist is 4-5 (4-0 MAAC) and is coming off a 9-4 loss to Holy Cross on Saturday, April 11 in Worcester.

Offensively, the Red Foxes are led by sophomore attackman Corey Zindel and junior attackman Ryan Sharkey. Zindel has posted 26 points on 8 goals and a team-high 18 assists, while Sharkey has recorded a team-high 19 goals and two assists. Sharkey was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on April 6 after scoring a career-high five goals and adding an assist versus VMI on April 4.

On defense, the team is anchored by senior defenseman James Taylor III. Taylor has caused a team-high 11 turnovers and also picked up 10 ground balls this season.

Senior Ryan Penner has played 526:35 minutes in goal for the Red Foxes in 2009. Penner has allowed 65 goals and made 115 saves on the year to record a 7.41 goals against average and a .639 save percentage. Penner earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on March 23.

After Wednesday's contest, Providence remains at home for a 7:00 p.m. contest against cross-town rival Brown on Saturday, April 18 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The game is part of the lacrosse team's annual Alumni Day. The game will be preceded by the Alumni Odd/Even game at 4:00 p.m. Admission to both events is free.
