Men's Lacrosse Travels To Manhattan Wednesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team travels to Riverdale, N.Y. for a 4:00 p.m. contest with Manhattan College on Wednesday, April 22 at Gaelic Park. PC enters the game with a 6-7 record (5-1 MAAC) and a second place spot in the MAAC standings. Manhattan sports a 7-7 record (3-3 MAAC) in 2009 and is tied for fourth place in the league.

The Friars own a 10-4 advantage in the all-time series versus the Jaspers. In the last meeting between the schools, PC earned a 12-4 win on March 15, 2008 in Providence. PC is 6-2 at home, 3-2 away and 1-0 on neutral fields all-time against Manhattan. The schools first met in 1996, with the Friars winning, 24-4, in Providence. PC has won seven-consecutive games in the series.

Providence has already clinched a spot in the MAAC Tournament for an unprecedented ninth-consecutive season. PC's next two games at Manhattan and versus Siena will determine what seed the Friars will be entering the tournament which will be held from May 1-3 in Buffalo, N.Y.

PC is coming off a 10-6 loss to No. 16/14 Brown on Saturday, April 18 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Brown won the game in large part to a second quarter in which the team outscored Providence, 5-0. Junior Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) led the Friars with three goals and a career-high nine ground balls and sophomore Mike Feldberg (Voorhees, N.J.) added three points on a goal and two assists.

The Friars have been strong defensively in MAAC play this season. PC ranks first in the conference with 5.13 goals allowed per game and is also first in save percentage with a .686 mark. The Friars rank second with 11.67 saves per game. Providence senior goaltender Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) is first in the league in goals against average (4.99) and save percentage (.694).

Scouting Manhattan

Manhattan is 7-7 (3-3 MAAC) after a 12-11, overtime loss to Canisius on April 18.

Offensively, the Jaspers are led by junior attackmen James Synowiez and Joe Variano. Synowiez has posted a team-high 47 points on 35 goals and 12 assists, while Variano has recorded 19 goals and a team-high 15 assists.

On defense, the team is anchored by freshman defenseman Kyle Moeller. Moeller has caused a team-high 25 turnovers and has also picked up 40 ground balls this season.

John Geagan has played 732:49 minutes in goal this season for the Jaspers. Geagan has made 136 saves while allowing 119 goals for a 9.74 goals against average and a .533 save percentage.

Next Game

After Wednesday's contest, the Friars play their regular season finale versus Siena on Saturday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The team will honor its four graduating student-athletes and their families in a pregame ceremony. The game against Siena is also Providence's final MAAC game before the team moves into the BIG EAST Conference next season. Former players that competed during the MAAC era of PC lacrosse (1996-2009) will be honored at halftime.
