Men's Lacrosse Drops Home Finale To Siena, 8-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team (6-9, 5-3) fell to first-place Siena (10-5, 8-0) by the score of 8-5 on Saturday, April 25 on Senior Day at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Friars moved as close as one goal at 6-5 with 5:11 remaining in the game but Siena scored the contest's final two goals to secure an 8-0 finish in the MAAC.

Junior Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) led the Friars with three goals and senior Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) added two points on a goal and an assist in his final regular season game in a PC uniform. Labadini now has 91 career points, moving him into a tie for 21st place with Brian Kirkwood '92 and Kevin McCarthy '88 all-time at Providence.

The Friars struck first at the 13:39 mark of the opening quarter on a goal by Tigh off an assist from junior Jackson Fallon (Arlington, Mass.). The Saints responded with goals by Kenny Mazzone and Ryan Duggan to take a 2-1 lead with 9:11 to go in the second quarter. Neither team scored in the final nine minutes of the period and Siena enjoyed a 2-1 advantage at the half.

In the opening seconds of the second half, Mike Bowler (Winchester, Mass.) won the stanza's first face-off and sprinted down the field to bounce a shot past Siena goaltender Brent Herbst to even the score at two. The Friars took their first lead of the game (3-2) with 7:31 left in the third quarter, with Labadini netting a score off a good feed from freshman Pete Wujciak (Essex Falls, N.J.)

Mazzone answered for Siena with two-straight goals to put the Saints up 5-3 with 1:27 remaining in the third. Bryan Neufeld added a score at the 12:13 mark of the final quarter and Siena took a 6-3 advantage.

The Friars got back into the game with two goals by Tigh over the next six minutes to pull PC back within one at 6-5. On his second goal, Tigh caught a lengthy downfield pass from Friar goaltender Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) and scored during a PC penalty to give the team its first man-down goal of the season.

Providence could not move any closer than one, and Jordan Loftus scored the game's final two goals to give Siena the 8-5 win.

The Friars enjoyed a 33-to-26 advantage in ground balls on the day but they were outshot by the Saints, 35-to-23.

Bryan took the loss in goal for the Friars, making nine saves while allowing eight goals. Herbst earned the win for Siena, allowing five goals and making 10 saves.

The game was PC's final MAAC regular season game before the Friars move into the BIG EAST Conference next season. Former Friar lacrosse players that competed in the MAAC era of the school's lacrosse program (1996-2009) were honored in a halftime ceremony.

Next up for the Friars is the annual MAAC Tournament, held in Buffalo, N.Y. this season from May 1-3. The Friars seed in the tournament will be determined when the conference season wraps up Saturday night. PC will either play at 1:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1.
