PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team lost a hard fought game to BIG EAST foe Rutgers, 1-0, on Saturday, October 16 in Providence, R.I.
The Scarlet Knights took a 1-0 lead 13:05 into the game as Nicole Gentile scored off an initial shot on a penalty corner that was saved by Friar goalkeeper Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.). It was the first penalty corner of the game for either team. The game was evenly played the remainder of the half as each team recorded six shots and three penalty corners. Rutgers, however, held the edge in shots on goal, 5-3. The Friars' best scoring chance in the first half came off back-to-back shots by sophomore Christie Lonsky (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) just 7:49 into the game. Lonsky collected a rebound off the goalkeepers pads created by her own shot, then sent the rebound just wide of the right post.
The second half of play was a scoreless draw, allowing for Gentile's first-half tally to earn Rutgers the victory. Providence outshot Rutgers, 5-3, in the second half and but the Scarlet Knight defense played solid all afternoon, pushing aside some excellent opportunities created by the Friars.
For the game, Providence held an 11-9 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners. Providence's final corner of the day came as regulation ended. Senior Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) got the call for PC to try and tie the game, 1-1, and send it to overtime. Her shot sailed wide of the cage after being deflected by a defender.
Weidman finished the day with five saves for Providence, while Rutgers goalkeeper Sarah Stuby earned the shut-out victory with five saves.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 17 against Cal at 11:00 a.m. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. A neutral site game between Stanford and Rutgers will follow at approximately 1:30 p.m.
