PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated California, 2-1, in non-conference action on Sunday, October 17 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
California took a 1-0 lead 15:40 into the game as Erin Magill found the back of the cage during a penalty corner. Deanna Kennedy and Shannon Elmitt were credited with assists on the play.
Providence tied the game, 1-1, just over three minutes later (18:53). Senior Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) dove at the right post to deflect the ball into the back of the cage off a crossing feed from sophomore Nicole Fernandez (Tewksbury, Mass.). Cal held a 6-2 advantage in shot attempts in the first half, and also held a 5-0 edge in penalty corners.
In the second half, sophomore Christie Lonsky (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 51:05. Senior Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) got the action going as she deflected a ball into the goalkeeper's pads. Lonsky came up with the rebound and found the back of the cage.
The Friars took control of the second half, showing more aggressiveness on the offensive side of the field. PC held a 9-5 advantage in shots during the second half, and also held a 6-2 edge in penalty corners. For the game, shots were even at 11 apiece, while Cal led the way in penalty corners, 7-6.
Sophomore Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) earned the victory in goal for Providence with six saves. Maddie Hand also made six saves for Cal.
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, October 20 as they head across town to face Brown University. The game will be played on Warner Roof and is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
