BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College field hockey team earned its first victory of the season, defeating Northeastern, 2-0, at Sweeney Field in Boston, Mass. on September 15.
Providence took a 1-0 lead 14:01 into the game when senior midfielder Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) scored her first goal of the season when she tipped it in off an initial shot. Sophomore Christie Lonsky (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) was credited with the assist. The Friars held a 1-0 lead at halftime and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) scored her first goal of the season 10 minutes into the second half to give Providence a 2-0, lead. Junior defender Ashley Mulkey (Windham, N.H.) registered the assist. Despite being outshot 9-2 in the second half, the Friars were able to hold on for a 2-0 victory.
Northeastern held the advantage in shots, 11-7, and in penalty corners, 5-2. Junior goalkeeper Shannon DiStefano (East Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded four saves for the Friars and posted her first career shutout.
Providence will face Columbia in a non-conference matchup on Sunday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be held at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
