PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Columbia, 2-0, at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I., on September 19.
Providence took a 1-0 lead 14:58 into the first half when freshman Brittany Ross (Scarborough, Maine) scored her first-career goal on a deflection. Senior Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) who took the initial shot, was credited with the assist. The Friars held a 1-0 lead at halftime, holding a 9-2 advantage in shots and 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Eleven minutes into the second half Ruggieri scored her second goal of the season to give Providence a, 2-0 lead. Fellow senior Kelly Grogan (Allenwood, N.J.) was credited with the assist. Columbia pulled goalkeeper Christie O'Hara and played a man up for eight minutes. Despite being outshot 6-1 in the second half, the Friars were able to hold on for a 2-0 victory.
Providence held the advantage in shots, 10-8, and in penalty corners, 7-5. Junior goalkeeper Shannon DiStefano (East Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded three saves and registered her second-consecutive shutout.
The Friars return to action on Friday, September 24 when they open up BIG EAST Conference play against the University of Connecticut. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
