Field Hockey Unravels Late At No. 4 Connecticut

Oct. 17, 2014 Final Stats STORRS, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team trailed by just one goal at halftime to fourth-ranked Connecticut, and were within striking distance with 10 minutes to play (3-1), but the Huskies tallied four goals in the final 10 minutes to take a convincing 7-1 victory.

The Friars started the game strong and managed to fire off five shots in the opening 11 minutes of play, but the Huskies were able to turn away the threat. Connecticut settled in and got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Charlotte Veitner was credited wiht the goal, and was assisted by Casey Umstead. Connecticut held a 6-5 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in penalty corners after the first 35 minutes of play, and maintained its 1-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Huskies scored in the 49th and 57th minute to take a 3-0 advantage with goals from Sophie Bowden and Darby Smith.

Providence got on the board at 60:29 to get within two goals (3-1). Senior Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was credited with the unassisted goal, marking her 12th tally of the season.

UConn answered right back just eight seconds later, and it started a string of four unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes. UConn's Chole Hunnable led the charge with two goals, while Roisin Upton and Kendall Youngblood each added a marker.

Connecticut completed the match with a 21-8 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. The Huskies out-shot the Friars 15-3 in the decisive second half.

The Friars return to action on Friday, Oct. 24 against 19th-ranked Old Dominion at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via FOX Sports GO.
