Softball Captures Series Against Georgetown With 6-3 Win

April 26, 2015 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Providence College softball team defeated Georgetown, 6-3, in the BIG EAST series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Friars (13-21, 6-10 BIG EAST) win the series, 2-1, with the splitting of a doubleheader yesterday (April 25).
Providence wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first with a lead-off solo home run by sophomore Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.), to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. The home run was Lundstrom's ninth of the season.
Georgetown (14-30, 4-12 BIG EAST) responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run by Megan Hyson to take a 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the second, freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit her first collegiate home run on a three-run shot to help the Friars recapture the lead (4-2). Seniors Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.) and Sarah Kitterman (Houston, Texas) scored on the home run.
The Hoyas scored one run in the bottom of the second to pull within one of the Friars (4-3) on a single up the middle by Taylor Henry that scored Gabriela Elvina.
Sophomore Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to left field in the top of the fourth to increase Providence's lead to two (5-3).
Lundstrom hit an RBI double to score Paiva for an extra insurance run in the fifth, giving the Friars a 6-3 lead that would hold for the rest of the contest.
Sophomore Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) went the distance for the Friars with seven innings pitched and five strikeouts.
Lauren O'Leary received the loss for Georgetown in one inning pitched, giving up four earned runs.
The Friars return home to Raymond Field on Tuesday, April 28 to host Bryant in the team's PINK OUT game. The contest is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
