DeLAND, Fla. - The Providence College softball team split day two of the Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Fla. In game three, the Friars were defeated by Pittsburgh, 13-0. Later that day in game four versus Colgate, Providence won in extra innings, 6-5. With the split, Providence moved to 5-4 on the season.
Pittsburgh quickly got the lead in the bottom of the first, registering six runs. In the second inning, the Panthers added another run. In the fourth, Pittsburgh added six more runs for the final score, 13-0.
Pittsburgh pitcher, Sarah Dawson pitched five innings without allowing a hit. Senior
Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) started on the mound for the Friars, allowing three hits in one inning. Sophomore
Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched three innings and struck out one batter.
Providence was the first to get on the board in game four versus Colgate. In the bottom of the second, freshman
Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) hit a one-run single, that brought in graduate student
Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Senior
Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) singled, which sent sophomore
Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) home. Junior
Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit a one-run single to center, which allowed Baldassari to score, making the game 3-0 at the bottom of the second.
Colgate retaliated with three runs in the third inning, followed by another run in the fourth to get the lead, 4-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Abbatiello recorded her second RBI of the game to bring in junior
Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) to even the game at four. Sophomore
Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) followed up with a single that brought in Abbatiello to regain the lead back, 5-4.
In the top of the sixth, the Raiders added another run to tie the game at five, which sent the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Abbatiello singled to center field to bring in Luttrell for her third RBI of the game.
Providence freshman
Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) pitched 3.1 innings recording four strike outs and allowing five hits. Junior
Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) relieved McCune midway through the fourth inning. McCune pitched a total of 4.2 innings for the save. She recorded two strikeouts and allowed four hits.
The Friars will continue play in the Stetson Invitational with their final game versus Pittsburgh tomorrow (Feb. 28) at 10:00 a.m. in DeLand, Fla.
