Softball Defeated By Pittsburgh In Final Game Of Stetson Invitational

DeLAND, Fla. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Pittsburgh, 11-4, in the final game of the Stetson Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 28. With the loss, the Friars moved to 5-5 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 11-4.
The first inning remained scoreless; however, in the top of the second, Pittsburgh scored four runs.
In the bottom of the second, senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) hit a two-run single that brought in sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.), to narrow Pittsburgh's lead, 4-2.
In the top of the third, the Panthers scored another run to make the game, 5-2. The Friars had trouble retaliating and in the fifth inning Pittsburgh scored four more runs for a seven point lead, 9-2.
The Friars tallied a run in the sixth with another RBI from Baldassari's single up the middle to allow Veler to score.
In the top of the seventh, Pittsburgh knocked in two more runs. The Friars did not catch the Panther's lead, but did tally one more run for the final score, 11-4.
Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) started on the mound and pitched three innings. She recorded three strike outs and allowed seven hits. Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) relieved Huntly in the fourth inning and pitched four innings in total. She registered three strikeouts and allowed six hits.
The Friars will return to action tomorrow (Feb. 29) to face the Stetson Hatters in a double header at 1:00 and 3:30 in DeLand, Fla.
