Softball Splits Double Header At Stetson

DeLAND, Fla. - The Providence College softball team split a double header at Stetson on Tuesday, March 1 in DeLand, Fla. With the 3-2 loss in the first game and the 6-2 win in the second game, the Friars moved to 6-6, while Stetson moved to 12-7.

In game one versus Stetson, the Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.). In the second inning, senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) hit a one-run single up the middle.

In the bottom of the third, Stetson pulled ahead with three runs for the final score, 3-2.

Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched six innings, allowed eight hits, and struck out one batter.

In the top of the first of the second game, sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a two-run double up the middle to drive Lundstrom and Lee home. Later in the first, senior Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hit a two-run single to bring in sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Rurka home.

Stetson entered the bottom of the first down, 4-0, but scored two runs to cut the Friars lead, 4-2.

The Friars scored another run in the second when Veler hit a double to right field, allowing Lundstrom to score. In the top of the seventh the Friars pulled away with another run off of a single from graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) for the final score, 6-2.

On the mound for the Friars was sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.), she pitched all seven innings, struck out four batters, and allowed six hits.

The Friars will return to action in Clearwater, Fla. for the USF Under Armour Invitational from March 4-6.
