Softball Splits Double Header At Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Providence College softball team split its double header at Butler on Saturday, April 2 in Indianapolis, Ind. In game one versus the Bulldogs the Friars were defeated, 5-3, and in game two, the Friars defeated the Bulldogs, 4-2. With the win and the loss the Friars moved to 13-16 (1-3 BIG EAST), while the Bulldogs moved to 20-14 (3-2 BIG EAST).

In game one, Butler jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the third, graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) hit a two-run home run to cut Butler's lead to one run, 3-2. Butler knocked in another run in the bottom of the third to make the game, 4-2.

In the top of the fourth, the Friars tallied a run after sophomore Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit a single to third base which allowed junior Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) to score to put the Friars down by one run, 4-3. Butler scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth for the final score, 5-3.

Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched six innings, struck out four batters, and allowed nine hits.

In game two, the Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Luttrell hit a single to left field to knock in senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.). Butler retaliated with a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one.

In the top of the third, sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a two-run double to get a 3-1 Friar lead. The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the fifth to make the game 3-2 in favor of Providence.

The Friars tallied another run in the top of the six after Baldassari hit a sacrifice fly to center field which allowed sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) to register a run for the final score, 4-2.

Sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) registered the win, pitched seven innings, struck out nine batters, and allowed just four hits.

The Friars will return to action tomorrow (April 3) for the final game of the three-game series at Butler in Indianapolis, Ind.
