Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team finished its season series against the Villanova Wildcats with a double header on Saturday, April 14. The Friars were defeated 5-2 in game one and lost the second game 3-2. With the loses, the team drops to 9-23 (4-7) on the season.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Friars started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a single to drive in Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.).
- Providence added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) started the inning by hitting a double and was then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.). Veler was then brought home when Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
- Villanova responded in the top of the fifth inning by scoring four runs.
- The Wildcats added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make the score 5-2.
- Providence would be unable to score in the final two frames and dropped the game, 5-2.
- Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) was the pitcher of record for Providence. She allowed four runs in four innings and dropped to a season record of 1-6.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
-The second game was closely contested as the first four innings were a pitcher's dual between Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) and Villanova's Caitlyn Dickman. Neither allowed a run through the first three innings.
- Villanova finally struck first, scoring two runs in the fourth inning.
- Providence responded in the bottom of the fourth with a run of their own. When Portillo hit a ground ball to the short stop, Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) patiently waited until after the short shop threw the ball before darting home for the score.
- Villanova made the score 3-1 in the top of the sixth by scoring another run.
- The Friars responded in the bottom of the sixth when Rurka scored on a wild pitch.
- Providence would be unable to score again and would drop the game, 3-2.
- Out of the three runs allowed, only two were earned against Ramirez. She was credited with the loss and now has a season record of 5-9.
- Veler led the offensive efforts for Providence, tallying two hits in the loss.
