Softball Splits Day One Doubleheader At Charge On Classic

Cameron Dunn recorded her first collegiate grand slam.
ORLANDO, Fla.- The Providence College softball team split two games in the opening day of the Charge On Classic on Friday, February 28, in Orlando, Fla. The Friars earned their first win of the season with a 15-4 victory over North Florida before falling to host UCF, 4-3, in game two. Providence moved to 1-10 on the season. The Friars' first win of the season was highlighted by a three-run RBI by Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) in the sixth followed by a grand slam from sophomore Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) in the seventh. Dunn's grand slam marked the first of her collegiate career.
GAME NOTES VS. NORTH FLORIDA
-The Ospreys struck first with a run in the first inning (1-0).
- The Friars tied the score in the second (1-1) after Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) singled to left centerfield, effectively scoring Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.).
- North Florida regained the lead after adding a run in the bottom of the second inning (2-1).
- Momentum swung in favor of Providence as the Friars scored two runs in the fourth after a fielding error and an RBI single by Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) (3-2).
- PC began to extend its lead with six runs in the top of the fifth. Eichten accounted for three of the six RBI. Friars led, 9-2.
- Douma drilled in another RBI for the Friars to bring the lead to 10-2 in the top of the sixth.
- The Ospreys retaliated in the bottom of the sixth with a run (10-3).
- Providence added five runs in the seventh highlighted by a grand slam from Dunn. It marked the first of her collegiate career (15-3).
- North Florida recorded a run in the bottom of the seventh but the Friars were able to clinch the 15-4 win.
- Dunn finished with a game-high four RBI on a 2-5 effort from the plate. The sophomore also scored two runs.
- Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) earned the Friars' first win of the season. The graduate student faced 18 batters, recording two strikeouts while conceding five hits and two earned runs.
- The last time the Friars recorded 15 runs in a game was on March 3, 2024, when PC defeated the Howard Bison, 15-1, in five innings.
GAME NOTES AT UCF
- Rachel Petrarca opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly that scored Smith (1-0).
- The Friars extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth after back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Hanna Aldrich and Dunn, allowing Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas) and Eichten to cross the plate.
- The Knights scored four unanswered runs across the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead. The Friars were unable to find the answer in the seventh and fell 4-3.
- Alannah Hopkins (Sylva, N.C.) pitched a complete game for the Friars. The junior faced 24 at-bats, conceding seven hits and four earned runs.
ON DECK
The Friars will resume Charge On play with two games tomorrow, March 1, in Orlando, Fla. PC will face Georgia Southern at 11:30 a.m. before wrapping up the day with a rematch against UCF at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
