Providence College Softball Rounds Out Regular Season Tournament Action At The Charge On Classic

The Friars will play in five games from Feb. 28 – March 2.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College softball team is set to compete in the Charge On Classic hosted by the University of Central Florida. The Friars will compete in five games from Feb. 28 to March 2 in Orlando, Fla.  The team will open tournament play on February 28 against North Florida at 4:30 p.m., followed by a matchup against the host team, Central Florida, at 7:00 p.m. On March 1, Providence will take on Georgia Southern at 11:30 a.m. before facing UCF again at 4:30 p.m. The Friars will wrap up tournament action on March 2 with a game against George Mason at 9:00 a.m. All games will be streamed on ESPN+.  

"We are excited to continue high-level play in Florida," Head Coach Kelsey Christensen said. "These high-level opponents are going to challenge us for our BIG EAST Schedule."

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE 

Providence enters Charge On Classic play with a 0-9 overall record. The Friars are coming off a bye-week.  

Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) has started all nine games this season. She holds a team-high .381 batting average, and a .536 on-base percentage. Aldrich finished her 2024 season with a career-best .328 batting average. In 131 at-bats, she recorded 43 hits, including five doubles, two triples and two home runs, while driving in 25 runs. Over the past two seasons with the Friars, she has maintained a .335 batting average, with 53 hits, 34 runs scored, a .449 slugging percentage and 42 putouts. 

Sophomore Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) leads the team with a .545 slugging percentage and five RBI. The first baseman had a standout weekend at the Bubly Invitational, recording her first home run of the season against Boston College on Feb. 15 and a season-high five putouts versus Binghamton on Feb. 16.  

Junior Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) has had a standout season so far for the Friars. At the Bubly Invitational, she delivered a strong performance at the plate, going 6-for-17 (.353) with two RBIs and one run scored. Defensively, the outfielder recorded 14 putouts over five games. 

SCOUTING NORTH FLORIDA 

North Florida enters Charge On play with a 14-4 overall record. The Ospreys most recently went 4-1 at the Make It Happen Games, going 2-0 against both Siena and Cornell, with their only loss coming against Ohio State.  

The Ospreys set a program record for runs scored on Feb. 22 in their 18-11 win over Cornell. UNF's 18 runs marked the most runs scored since the 1996 season. The team registered 20 hits in that game which also set a new D-1 program mark.  

Allison Benning leads both the Ospreys' pitching staff and lineup. The senior delivered a perfect seven-inning performance in the team's 6-0 win over Siena on February 23. As a two-way player, Benning finished the weekend with a .700 batting average, three home runs, eight RBI and 11 intentional walks. In the circle, she earned a 2-0 record by striking out 15 batters in 12 innings, allowing only one hit and no earned runs in two appearances. Across 39.1 innings overall, Benning holds a 2.06 ERA. With a 5-2 record she has allowed just 18 hits and nine earned runs. At the plate Benning leads the team with a .465 batting average, a 1.301 slugging percentage and a.646 on base percentage. She holds a team-best 10 home runs and 26 RBI. 

Senior Lauren Brock set a program record last weekend against Cornell, becoming the first player in the program's D-I history to record four hits and four runs in a single game. She currently boasts a team-best 23 hits.  

SCOUTING CENTRAL FLORIDA 

UCF will begin Charge On play with a 13-6-1 overall record. Over the weekend, the Knights hosted the SpaceU Classic where they posted a 5-1 mark, earning wins over Quinnipiac, Pittsburgh, FGCU and Columbia while falling to Ohio State. Central Florida outscored its opponents by an aggregate of 24 runs to 12 across the six games.  

The Knights most recently competed in a mid-week road game against No. 25 FAU on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The team upset the owls, 3-0, marking the Knights' second top-25 win this season. 

Sierra Humphreys and Izzy Mertes head up the lineup for UCF, holding a .393 (24-61) and .345 (19-55) batting average, respectively. Humphreys leads the squad in RBI (12), slugging percentage (.574) and on-base percentage (.431). Mertes, a freshman, recorded her eighth RBI-double of the season to cap off the Knight's scoring in their 3-0 win over No. 22 FAU. 

Pitcher Kaitlyn Felton's stands out in the circle for UCF. The senior threw her first career no-hitter, striking out seven of the 22 batters faced in the Knights' clash with Quinnipiac on Feb.20. She finished the weekend with a perfect 0.00 ERA in 14.1 total innings, earning three wins while throwing two seven-inning complete games and surrendering just six hits and no walks. Overall, Felton holds a 0.73 ERA in 11 appearances across 38.1 innings while yielding only four walks and a batting average-against of .193. Her 0.73 ERA is the third-lowest mark in the Big 12 Conference.  

SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN 

The Eagles enter Charge On play with an 8-6 overall record. Over the weekend, GSU hosted the GATA Challenge where they posted a 4-0 mark with wins over Fairfield, Oakland and Campbell (2-0).  

Georgia Southern most recently competed in a mid-week road match, falling, 4-2, to Mercer on Feb. 26.   

Freshman Payton Cushman leads the team in batting average (.364), hits (16), slugging percentage (.500) and on-base percentage (.429). She recorded a career-high three hits in the team's 7-1 win over Fairfield on Feb. 21.  

Maddie Johnson commands the circle for the Eagles with a 1.97 ERA and a 4-2 record. Across 39 innings, she has faced 153 at-bats, conceding only 41 hits, 11 earned runs and nine walks. The freshman leads the team in strikeouts (29) and batting average-against (.268).  

SCOUTING GEORGE MASON 

George Mason begins Charge On play with a 4-8 overall record including a 3-5 mark in neutral play. The Patriots most recently hosted Niagara and Saint Francis in their weekend home openers. The team dropped two games against Saint Francis and split games against Niagara.  

Emily Lampela leads the lineup with a .375 batting average, .656 slugging percentage and a .474 on-base percentage. She holds team-highs in runs scored (nine), hits (12) and RBI (nine). The sophomore recorded two RBI and scored two runs in the team's lone win over Niagra on Feb. 23. 

Jordan Anderson commands the circle for the Patriots. The senior holds a .49 ERA over 14.1 innings. She has registered five strikeouts while allowing only 11 hits and three earned runs across 53 at-bats.  

ON DECK  

The Friars will kick off their BIG EAST schedule by hosting the Creighton Bluejays in a three-game series from March 7–9. The contests will be played at Glay Field in Providence, R.I., with the opening game streaming on the BIG EAST Network and the next two airing on FloSports.
