STORRS, Conn. - The Providence College softball team (22-14, 11-2 BIG EAST) defeated the University of Connecticut Huskies (21-23, 12-4 BIG EAST), 7-6, in game one of the three-game weekend series on Friday, April 17 in Storrs, Conn. Seniors
Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) and
Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas) both homered in the contest. Â

GAME NOTES:Â
• The Friars got on the board first when Renny launched a two-run home run down the left field line, bringing in
Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) to give Providence the lead in the first inning. Â
• In the second, Jonte followed Renny's first-inning homer with a three-run shot to left-center field, scoring
Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) and
Dominique Gallardo (Lexington, S.C.) to extend the advantage to 5-0.Â
• In the sixth, after UConn responded with a run of its own, Dunn singled to right-center field, driving in Gallardo while Jonte advanced to third, making it 6-1, Providence.Â
• In the seventh, Gallardo added insurance when she singled to center field, driving in
Emerson Buckley (Methuen, Mass.), who came in to pinch-run for
Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.), while
Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) advanced to third, making it 7-5, Providence. Â
• In the circle,
Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) got the start. She pitched six innings, allowing five hits and striking out three.Â
Grace Brooks (Meridian, Idaho) came in relief in the seventh, allowing one run and earning the save. Â

The Friars return to action tomorrow, April 18, for a doubleheader against the Huskies in Storrs, Conn. The first game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the second at 5:00 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
