STORRS, Conn. - The Providence College softball team (22-15, 11-3 BIG EAST) split a double header against the University of Connecticut Huskies (22-23, 13-4 BIG EAST). The Friars won game one, 7-6, in eight innings and were defeated in game two, 12-4, in six innings. Providence claimed the three-game series, 2-1, and maintained first place in the BIG EAST Conference.
GAME ONE NOTES
- Providence took a 1-0 lead in the top of first behind an RBI by Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.)
- The Huskies responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
- UConn added a run in the third inning to extend its lead (3-1).
- In the top of the seventh, Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) and Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) each added an RBI to tie the game, 3-3.
- Providence took the lead in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI by Dunn (4-3).
- Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) had a diving catch to end the game in the bottom of the eighth.
- Addy Frye (New Castle, Pa.) recorded the win for Providence, tossing four strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.
GAME TWO NOTES
- The Friars got on the board in the third inning when Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.) singled to right field, driving in Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas). UConn led, 3-1.
- In the fourth, Hailey Frantz (Danville, Calif.) homered down the left field line to get the Friars within one (3-2).
- De La Fuente delivered again with a single up the middle, bringing home Dunn as Peterson moved to second. The run cut the Friars' deficit to 5-3.
- In the sixth, the Friars fought back to cut the lead to four runs when Jonte lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Dominique Gallardo (Lexington, S.C.) to score.
- UConn scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game and secure the 12-4 win.
- In the circle, Alannah Hopkins (Sylva, N.C.) got the start, pitching two full innings and gave up four runs. Grace Brooks (Meridian, Idaho) came in relief, pitching 3.2 innings.
