PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Villanova, 6-5, on Saturday, April 25 in Providence, R.I. in its final game of the 2015 campaign.
Junior Michael Perettine (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and senior Buck McClure (Dallas, Texas) each scored two goals to lead the Friars. McClure finished the season second on the team in points with 26 on 15 goals and 11 assists. Perettine finished tied for second in goals-scored with 16.
Villanova opened up the first quarter with an unassisted goal from Christian Cuccinello with 8:41 remaining. The Friars responded with back-to-back goals. The first goal came from senior Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) with 6:29 remaining in the first quarter. Junior Will Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y.) was credited with the assist. With 3:07 left in the quarter, the Friars took a 2-1 lead with an unassisted goal from Perettine.
Providence entered the second quarter with a 2-1 lead and dominated the entire stanza. The Friars scored three goals and held Villanova scoreless. McClure, freshman Joshua Keller (Grand Rapids, Mich.), and Perettine each notched unassisted goals in the second quarter. The goals were scored at 11:09, 6:19, and 4:31, respectively. Providence entered halftime with a four-goal lead (5-1).
After halftime, the Friars scored first when McClure found the back of the net for the second time in game with 8:55 left in the third quarter to gain a five goal lead, 6-1.
Villanova's Johnny Gallaway scored with 3:53 left in the third quarter to cut the Friars' lead to four. Providence entered the fourth quarter with a four-goal cushion (6-2).
Villanova rallied, scoring three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter. The first goal, which cut Friars' lead to 6-3, was from Gallaway with 13:32 remaining. The next two goals were within 35 seconds of each other, one from Eric Gartner and the next from Jack Curran. The Friars held off the Wildcats in the last six minutes to maintain their 6-5 lead for a BIG EAST victory.
In net for the Friars was senior Peter Badgley (Summit, N.J), who made 18 saves, giving him a .560 save percentage for the season.
Greg Stamatov started the game in net for Villanova, registering eight saves while recording the loss. Dan Willis took over in the second half for the Wildcats stopping two shots while allowing one goal.
Providence finished the game 7-of-14 on face-offs. Sophomore Colin McKendry (Cary, N.C.) took the majority of the face-offs for the Friars, going 7-for-13.
"Our team has remained committed to getting better everyday despite the many close loses that we've had this season and for that reason they were rewarded today with a BIG EAST win on Senior Day versus a very good team," said head coach Chris Gabrielli. "Peter Badgley put forth an All-American performance in cage and has been our rock all year long. He simply refused to lose his final game at PC. I am so appreciative of the way our seniors have led collectively this year. They helped push our culture in a positive direction, and I can't thank them enough for that."
The Friars finished their season with an overall record of 5-9 (1-4 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats ended their season with an overall record of 6-7 (1-4 BIG EAST).
