Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against DePaul

The Friars will close out the three-game series on Saturday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team (10-11, 4-1 BIG EAST) swept DePaul (12-17, 3-5 BIG EAST) in a doubleheader on Friday, March 20 at Glay Field. The Friars secured a 17-1 victory in five innings in the opener before taking game two, 7-6. Junior Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) led the offense with four RBI and one home run on the day.
 
GAME ONE NOTES
  • Providence took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning behind a two-run home run from Dunn and an RBI from Hailey Frantz (Danville, Calif.).
  • The Friars scored seven runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 10-0, highlighted by a three-run home run from Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.) along with RBIs from Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas), Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.), Frantz and Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.).
  • DePaul scored a run in the top of the third to get on the board and make it 10-1.
  • Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the third to extend Providence's lead to 11-1. 
  • The Friars added six runs to further advance their lead to 17-1 in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) along with RBIs from Dunn and Peterson.
  • Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) earned the win, pitching four innings and recording four strikeouts.
  • Providence's 17 runs were its most in a game since scoring 18 against Coppin State on March 4, 2022.
 
 
GAME TWO NOTES
  • DePaul scored two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Providence took a 3-2 lead in the second inning behind RBI singles from Jonte, Dunn and Peterson.
  • The Friars extended their lead to 4-2 in the third as Smith stole third and scored on a throwing error.
  • DePaul added four runs in the top of the sixth to reclaim the lead (6-4).
  • Providence took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth behind an RBI single from Lee and a two-RBI single by Jonte.
  • Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) pitched 1.2 innings of relief to record the win, throwing two strikeouts. 
 
 
ON DECK…
The Friars will return to action tomorrow, March 21, at 1:00 p.m. at Glay Field to close out the series against DePaul. The game will serve as the program's annual senior day, with a ceremony held postgame.
