The Friars host Holy Cross Tuesday (4 p.m.) before a Wednesday doubleheader at Boston University (2:30 p.m.).
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team (15-13, 7-2 BIG EAST) is set to host Holy Cross (7-20, 3-6 Patriot League) on Tuesday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I. The Friars will then travel to Boston University (29-11, 8-1 Patriot League) for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9, with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Providence returns to action after the Easter weekend off.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Providence enters Tuesday's matchup having won 11 of its last 14 games. The Friars recently opened BIG EAST play with a program-best 7-1 start. Additionally, their eight-game winning streak- which tied a school record- came to an end in the series finale against Seton Hall earlier this season.
Providence has three players closing in on 100 career hits. Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.), Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.), and Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) are all within single digits of the milestone.
Freshman Nikki Gallardo (Lexington, S.C.) recently earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition after a standout performance in a pair of non-conference games, hitting .833 (5-for-6). She totaled two doubles, two runs scored, and four RBI during the week. For the season, Gallardo is batting .278 with 11 RBI.
Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas) has provided a strong start for the Friars, posting a .400 batting average. The senior has recorded 24 hits, nine RBI, and a .525 slugging percentage. Jonte was named BIG EAST Player of the Week earlier this season following her performance in a weekend sweep of DePaul.
Dunn has had an impressive season for Providence so far. The infielder has been featured on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times and leads the team with 33 RBI, 11 home runs, and a .925 slugging percentage. Her 11 home runs are tied for second in the BIG EAST, while her slugging percentage ranks second in the conference.
In the circle, junior Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) leads the pitching staff with a 6-1 record and a 3.41 ERA. She has recorded 37 strikeouts across 41.0 innings pitched, and her ERA ranks fifth in the BIG EAST.
Tori Grifone recently earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition after a dominant outing against Dayton. She tossed 5.0 shutout innings, striking out eight while holding opponents to a .000 batting average. For the season, Grifone holds a 4-4 record with a 3.84 ERA and 26 strikeouts across 27.1 innings pitched.
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders come into Tuesday's game with a 7-20 record. They are led offensively by Bella Nugent, who is hitting .283 with multiple extra-base hits and a team-high OPS (.901) and a .533 SLG%. Emma Pietrzak leads the team with four home runs and 15 RBI.
In the circle, the Crusaders are led by Sophia Roncone, who has a 3-9 record and 79.1 innings pitched. She has recorded 64 strikeouts and three saves.
SCOUTING BOSTON UNIVERSITY
The Terriers enter Wednesday's matchup with a 29-11 overall record and an 8-1 mark in Patriot League play. They have been strong offensively, hitting .335 as a team with 293 runs scored and 36 home runs on the season.
Boston University features a balanced lineup with multiple players hitting above .340. Kylie Doherty leads the team with a .372 batting average, 15 home runs and 53 RBI, while Brooke Deppiesse (.382) and Kyomi Apalit (.374) also anchor the offense.
In the circle, Kasey Ricard leads the pitching staff with a 21-5 record and a 2.84 ERA. She has totaled 165 strikeouts in 153.0 innings pitched. Haley Ganino has also contributed with a 6-1 record and a 3.04 ERA.
