PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Merrimack, 18-7, on Tuesday, Feb. 25 in North Andover, Mass. The Friars improved to 3-2 on the season.
Ryan Bell (Smithtown, N.Y.) and
Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, Md.) paced the Friars' offense. Bell recorded six points on two goals and four assists, followed by Horrigan with five points on four goals and one assist.
1st Quarter:
• Providence scored six-straight goals to start the first quarter.
Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) contributed two goals in the quarter.
• Horrigan also added two goals in the Friars' scoring run. Bell and
Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) added one goal each.
• Merrimack was able to find the back of the net with 19 seconds left in the first quarter to make it 6-1.
• The Friars outshot the Warriors 15-5 in the opening 15.
2nd Quarter:
•
Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) opened the second quarter with a goal at 13:45, extending the Friars' lead to 7-1. He was followed by Horrigan, who netted his third goal of the day at 4:50.
• Merrimack responded with a goal at 4:03.
• Wilkerson and
Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.) then scored back-to-back goals for the Friars, pushing their lead to 10-2.
• Merrimack answered with a goal with just eight seconds left in the half, cutting Providence's lead to seven (10-3).

Dan Donahue (Weston, Mass.) recorded five saves in the first half.
• Providence outshot Merrimack 29-13 in the opening half.

Quinn McConnaughey (Cohasset, Mass.) went 9-for-14 at the faceoff 'X' in the first half.
3rd Quarter:
• Chambers opened the second half with a goal assisted by Bell at 14:00, extending the Friars' lead to 11-3.
• Merrimack answered with a goal at the 12:45 mark, bringing the score to 11-4.
• The Friars then went on a 4-0 run, with goals from Joseph, Bell,
Chris Jaskiewicz (Parkland, Fla.) and Horrigan to make it a 16-4 game.
• Merrimack closed the third quarter with back-to-back goals (16-6).
4th Quarter
• Providence scored back-to-back goals to open an 18-6 advantage.

Ben Dale (Wheaton, Ill.) and
Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.Y.) scored their first career goals at 7:25 and 7:04, respectively, for the Friars.
• Merrimack responded with a goal at the 2:57 mark to make the final score 18-7.
• The Friars outshot Merrimack, 48-17.
Notes:
• Horrigan recorded five points on four goals and one assist. His four goals moved him into a tie for 13th on the all-time in career goals at Providence, with a total of 85.
• Bell recorded six points on two goal and four assists. The Friars' all-time leading scorer owns 196 career points, continuing to build a cushion in the top spot.
• Bell also is the program's all-time assist leader (141 assists).
• Joseph recorded four points on three goals and one assist. Joseph's three goals moved him to19th on the all-time career goals list, with 70.
• Six Friars recorded a multi-goal game vs. Merrimack.
• Matia, Jaskiewicz and Schmitt recorded their first career goals as a Friars.
• Donahue recoded six saves and a .600 save percentage.
• McConnaughey went 13-20 at the faceoff 'X'.
What's Next: The Friars will travel to No. 18/RV Fairfield on Saturday, March 1. Faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
