Men’s Lacrosse Defeated At No. 6/8 Duke, 16-10

Jack Horrigan recorded five points on four goals and one assist.

DURHAM, N.C. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 6/8 Duke, 16-10, on Wednesday, March 12 in Durham, N.C. With the loss, the Friars fell to 4-4 on the season. Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, N.Y.) paced the Friars with five points on four goals and one assist. Freshman Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.) added three points on one goal and two assists.
 
 
1st Quarter:
• Horrigan opened the scoring for the Friars, netting a goal at 13:01 to give Providence a 1-0 lead.
• Duke responded scoring six unanswered goals to finish the quarter with a 6-1 lead.
• The Blue Devils outshot the Friars, 11-7, in the first quarter.
• Each team recorded four faceoff wins from the 'X' in the first quarter.

2nd Quarter:
• Duke opened the second quarter with a goal to take a 7-1 lead at 13:33.  
• Providence responded with two consecutive goals, cutting Duke's lead to 7-3 at 8:22. Ryan Bell (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Matia each found the back of the net.
• The Blue Devils answered with a goal at 4:59 to extend their lead to 8-3.
• Horrigan recorded his second goal of the game, cutting Duke's lead to 8-4 with 1:54 left in the half.
• Duke outshot Providence 13-8 in the second quarter and 24-15 in the first half.
Dan Donahue (Weston, Mass.) recorded eight saves and a .500 save percentage in the first half.
 
3rd Quarter:
• The Friars opened the second half with two consecutive goals, cutting the Blue Devils' lead to 8-6. Horrigan tallied his third goal of the game, while Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) scored his first.
• Duke responded with four unanswered goals to extend its lead to 12-6 at 3:46.
Sam Brazell found the back of the net for the Friars to bring the score to 12-7 at 1:37.
• The Friars held a faceoff win advantage of 4-3 over the Blue Devils from the 'X' in the third quarter.
 
4th Quarter
• Duke opened the fourth quarter with a goal at 14:30 to extend its lead to 13-7. 
Parker Kennedy (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) scored for Providence at 11:47, bringing the score to 13-8.
• The Blue Devils scored three consecutive goals extending their lead to 16-8.
• Providence closed out the game with two consecutive goals. Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) scored at 2:42, followed by Horrigan, who netted his fourth goal of the game with 41 seconds left, bringing the score to 16-10 at the final horn.
 
Notes:
• Horrigan recorded five points on four goals and one assists for the Friars, and is now tied for sixth all-time in career goals at Providence with 94.
• Horrigan's five points moved him to tied for 19th on the Friars all-time scoring list with 115 career points.
• Matia recorded a career-high three points on one goal and two assists.
• Bell recorded two points on one goal and one assist. The Friars' all-time leading scorer owns 206 career points, and is the first player in program history to reach 200 points.
• Bell is also the program's all-time assist leader (145 assists).
• Donahue recorded 13 saves and a .448 save percentage.
• The Friars went 11-28 from the faceoff 'X'
 
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars will travel to Saint Joseph's on Saturday, March 22 to play the Hawks. Faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
